Wall Street dips as investors await outcome of US-China trade talks

Image
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 138.97 points, or 0.54%, to 25,828.36, the S&P 500 lost 8.7 points, or 0.30%, to 2,870.72 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 32.73 points, or 0.41%, to 7,910.59. Wall Street's main indexes fell on Thursday ahead of critical trade negotiations between the United States and China, though they pared losses significantly after U.S. President Donald Trump said reaching a deal this week was possible. U.S. stocks had fallen more than 1% earlier in the session but recovered much of those losses after Trump said he had received a "beautiful letter" from Chinese President Xi Jinping. Negotiators will meet at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) on Thursday, Trump said. They are set to continue talks through Friday. Still, the United States has not backed down from hiking tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25% on Friday. Trump also said that paperwork had been initiated to levy 25% tariffs on a further $325 billion worth of...

Gold gains as risk appetite dips on Trump tariff-hike threat

Image
Gold prices rose on Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to hike tariffs on Chinese imports re-kindled trade tensions between the two countries and pushed investors to seek insurance in safe-haven assets. Spot gold was up 0.2 percent at $1,282.50 per ounce as of 0320 GMT. U.S. gold futures were unchanged at $1,283.90 an ounce. On Sunday, self proclaimed "tariff-man" Trump warned of a tariff hike on Chinese goods, marking a drastic change in stance from the previous week where he lauded progress made between the two countries regarding trade. Risk sentiment was dealt a blow on the news with Asian shares wallowing near a five-week low, providing impetus to gold, which is used by investors to hedge against economic and political instability. "There are significant catalysts for gold with the escalations on the trade-war front yesterday, but it is surprising we have not seen a significant follow through," said Stephen Innes, he...

Rs 25K cr rights issue not enough for Vodafone Idea: Experts

Image
As telecom major Vodafone Idea (VIL) opened its rights issue on Wednesday for the next two weeks with an aim to raise Rs 25,000 crore, sector experts say the fund would not be enough for the company given its high debt and the highly-competitive market. In the meantime, Bharti Airtel too has announced that on April 24 its committee for fund infusion would decide on the shareholders who would be able to participate in its rights issue for around Rs 25,000 crore.  Analysts say Airtel is in a better financial position than Vodafone Idea and unlike the newly-merged entity, the amount raised from the rights issue by Sunil Bharti Mittal-led Airtel would be sufficient for the time being. Vodafone Idea is offering 2,000 crore shares at a price of Rs 12.50 apiece. The entitlement ratio of the issue, which will close on April 24, has been fixed at 87 rights shares for every 38 currently held. Under rights issue, existing shareholders are offered to purchase additional...

Tata Motors falls 4% after weakness in China drags JLR global sales 4%

Image
Weaker market conditions continued to weigh on sales in China, which posted a decline 47.6 percent YoY, JLR said. Tata Motors shares declined nearly 4 percent in the morning on Friday after the Jaguar Land Rover's global sales performance dented by China. US-based luxury car maker Jaguar Land Rover said its retail sales in February 2019 fell 4.1 percent to 38,288 vehicles, compared to February last year. "Strong sales of I-PACE, E-PACE, refreshed Range Rover and Range Rover Sport were offset by overall weak customer demand in China as well as the run out of the old Range Rover Evoque," it reasoned. The company said sales of the all-new Evoque are expected to ramp up over the coming months. Retail sales were up significantly in North America (25.4 percent) and UK (11.3 percent) while Europe posted modestly higher growth of 1.1 percent in sales. However, weaker market conditions continued to weigh on sales in China, which posted a decline 47.6 ...

* Palm heads for the second straight session of gains * Ringgit strength limits palm's gains - trader By Emily Chow KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures edged higher on Monday, supported by the previous session's gains in Chicago soyoil prices, although a strong ringgit MYR= limited the upside.
