Yes Bank needs capital quickly to heal itself, calm investors

Image
Yes Bank Ltd’s shares have had a lousy run this year, losing a whopping 67% since April and underperforming benchmark indices by a massive margin. Indeed, at the current price the stock trades at below its estimated book value for FY20. Even so, analysts are in no hurry to rerate the stock. A new and strong management, and the move to come clean on the toxic level of its loan book hasn’t enthused investors to buy. Scepticism is rampant in the market and the lender’s formal release on Monday stating that these are unfounded concerns shows it knows the market’s sentiment is against it. Analysts at brokerage firm Jefferies India Pvt. Ltd, for instance, have pointed out the bank’s vulnerabilities and questioned its level of capital. “Discussion with market participants leaves us with an impression that the bank may not have come clean on the pool of stressed loans or its impact on the book value. This has created a trust deficit," said Jefferies India in a ...

Oil prices steady, U.S.-Iran tensions remain in focus

Image
Oil prices were steady on Tuesday, supported by worries over conflict between Iran and the United States but pressured by concerns about a potential decline in demand for crude. Benchmark Brent crude futures were up 3 cents at $64.89 a barrel by 0034 GMT. They rose 0.5% on Monday. U.S. crude futures were down 3 cents at $57.87 a barrel. The U.S. benchmark declined 0.8% in the previous session. Brent rose 5% last week and U.S. crude surged 10% after Iran shot down a U.S. drone on Thursday in the Gulf, adding to tensions stoked by attacks on oil tankers in the area in May and June. Washington has blamed the tanker attacks on Iran, which denies having any role. U.S. President Donald Trump targeted Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top Iranian officials with sanctions on Monday, taking an unprecedented step to increase pressure on Iran after Tehran's downing of the drone. Trump also said on Twitter that other countries should protect ...

Jet Airways slumps after report Hinduja, Etihad reconsider investment

Image
Shares of India's Jet Airways Ltd crashed to record lows on Tuesday, after a report that Hinduja Group and Etihad Airways may not invest in the cash-strapped airline which was forced to stop all flight operations nearly two months back. Middle Eastern carrier Etihad, which owns about 24% stake in Jet, had submitted a bid for the Indian airline last month, while family-run Hinduja Group was said to be considering putting in an offer. The Mint newspaper reported that Hinduja had decided to halt negotiations for buying a stake in Jet while Etihad had put its plan on hold to invest further. Promoters of Hinduja expressed concerns over ongoing government investigations into Jet and insolvency pleas submitted by its creditors, Mint reported, citing a source familiar with the matter. Jet and Hinduja did not comment on the matter, while Etihad, and SBI Capital Markets, the unit of State Bank of India (SBI) overseeing the sale of the stricken carrier, were not immedi...

Bharat Forge shares slip after North America Class 8 truck orders fall sharply

Image
Bharat Forge derives 20 percent of its standalone revenue from North America heavy trucks segment. Bharat Forge shares fell 1.7 percent intraday on June 6 after orders for Class 8 trucks in North America in May were worst since July 2016. Class 8 trucks orders in North America contracted sharply to 10,800 units, down 70 percent compared to the same month last year and 27 percent compared to previous month, reports CNBC-TV18 quoting ACT Research. The decline is attributed to manufacturing backlog and sharp fall in spot freight rates along with large order backlog. The stock was quoting at Rs 461.25, down Rs 1.90, or 0.41 percent on the BSE, at 1119 hours IST. While having a neutral call with a price target at Rs 498, Nomura said average monthly order inflow trends remained weak and monthly truck production should come down after touching an all-time high in April. For Bharat Forge, the brokerage has factored in flat volumes in export commercial vehicles...

Gold hits 2-month high as recession concerns burnish safe-haven appeal

Image
Gold prices rose on Monday to their highest in more than two months as heightened Sino-U.S. trade tensions and Washington's threat of tariffs on Mexico stoked worries of a global recession and drove investors to seek refuge in safe-haven bullion. Spot gold was up 0.5% at $1,312.37 per ounce at 0308 GMT, after touching its highest since March 27 at $1,312.60. U.S. gold futures rose 0.5% to $1,317.50 an ounce. "We are seeing a lot of traditional safe-haven hedging ... coming back to the fray," said Stephen Innes, managing partner, SPI Asset Management. "(Equity) markets seemed to be a little bit complacent. What caught them off-guard was Trump doubled down, signalling that (dealings between countries) on the trade war front is going to be quite aggressive." U.S. stock futures, Asian share markets and oil prices slipped to multi-month lows on Monday amid the mounting trade worries. Tensions between the United States and China e...

Gold eases as firm dollar, bond rally offset global slowdown worries

Image
Gold prices inched down on Thursday as bonds rallied and the dollar hovered near a two-year high, negating the support from an increasingly bitter Sino-U.S. trade dispute that rekindled doubts about global economic growth. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $1,277.71 per ounce, as of 0312 GMT. U.S. gold futures edged 0.3% lower to $1,276.70 an ounce. "Investors look like they prefer U.S Treasuries as a safe haven for now, evident by the inverted U.S yield curve," Howie Lee, an economist at OCBC Bank, said. "A strong dollar is also likely impeding big players such as China and India from consuming too much (of gold)." The dollar held steady against its key rivals on Thursday as escalating Sino-U.S. trade tensions forced investors into the shelter of safe-haven assets, including government bonds. Against a basket of six major currencies, the dollar was steady at 98.123, hovering within the reach of a two-year high of 98.371 hit a week ago. The inde...

Gold firms above $1,280 as weak U.S. data rekindles rate cut hopes

Image
Gold prices held steady on Friday after rising above $1,280 in the previous session as weak U.S. data pushed the dollar off 2-year highs and reignited hopes of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve this year. Spot gold was mostly steady at $1,283.41 per ounce by 0252 GMT, after rising as much as 1.1% to a one-week peak of 1,287.23 in the previous session. The metal has risen 0.5% so far this week. U.S. gold futures for June were down 0.2% at 1,282.40. "Gold has found a very good support around $1,270. There was some short covering after the (weak U.S.) data that pushed prices up. However, the upside could be limited as $1,290 is acting as a strong resistance," said Peter Fung, head of dealing at Wing Fung Precious Metals. The U.S. dollar retreated after hitting its highest level in two years as weak domestic data and the potential economic fallout from the trade war with China increased expectations for an interest-rate cut this year. Sales of new U.S....

Trade war could soon be impacting global markets -

Image
Recent spate of consensus beating economic data in the U.S. along with dollar breaking out to 52 week highs pressured gold prices. Better than expected Chinese export and credit growth were also seen as evidence of recovery against chants of a grim global outlook. Optimism surrounding the U.S – China trade deal not only removed the uncertainty factor but furthered expectations of growth revival as many pundits cite trade wars as the primary reason for slowdown.  Despite growth trends and forecasts pointing to a slow down and the resulting central bank dovishness, risk assets continued moving higher and gold continues to trade sluggish. All in all, gold prices ended the month at $1,283.5 an ounce, a decline of -0.7%. This third consecutive monthly loss brings gold at par to trade where it started the year. As the US enters late cycle, increasingly data points towards slowing growth but at times tend to depict contradictory readings causing volatility in currenc...

Gold prices inch lower on strong equities; Fed decision in focus

Image
Gold prices edged lower on Wednesday as a rebound in global equities made safe-haven assets less attractive, and markets awaited the Federal Reserve's latest policy announcement later in the day. Spot gold was down 0.2% to $1,280.31 per ounce as of 12:55 p.m. EDT (1655 GMT), after hitting a session low of $1,277.38. U.S. gold futures fell 0.3% to $1,282.30 an ounce. Investors are awaiting the end of a two-day meeting by the U.S. Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), after the central bank ended its three-year policy tightening drive last month, ditching projections for any interest rate hikes this year. "We have the U.S. economy still producing robust data which could turn off or relax some of the views that Fed is going to loosen the policy anytime soon," said Bart Melek, head of commodity strategies at TD Securities in Toronto. "We have economic numbers that are fairly well supported, equity markets are strong, gold doesn't tend to p...

Oil prices dip on surging U.S. crude stockpiles

Image
Oil prices fell on Thursday after U.S. crude stockpiles surged to their highest levels in almost 17 months amid record production. International benchmark Brent futures were at $71.57 per barrel at 0056 GMT, down 16 cents, or 0.2 percent, from their last close. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures were at $64.36 per barrel, down 25 cents, or 0.4 percent, from their previous settlement. U.S. crude inventories rose 7 million barrels to 456.6 million barrels in the last week, their highest since November 2017, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. U.S. crude oil production remained at a record 12.2 million barrels per day (bpd), making the United States the world's biggest oil producer ahead of Russia and Saudi Arabia. Despite this growth in U.S. supply, global oil markets remain tight amid supply cuts led by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), U.S. sanctions on oil exporters Iran and Venezuela, a...

Gold slips on firmer dollar, but weak equities limit losses

Image
Gold prices inched down on Wednesday as the dollar firmed, but the metal remained near a two-week peak hit in the previous session as equities slipped on concerns over global growth and trade tensions between the United States and Europe. Spot gold was down 0.1 percent at $1,302.02 per ounce at 0328 GMT, after touching its highest since March 28 at $1,306.09 the session before. U.S. gold futures slipped 0.2 percent to $1,306 an ounce. While the dollar gained about 0.1 percent against key rivals, a slip in Asian equities from eight-month highs kept bullion underpinned above the key $1,300 level. A strong U.S. dollar makes gold costlier for investors holding other currencies. "There is some switch from equities to gold after U.S. President Donald Trump voiced his intention to impose tariffs on imports from European Union and the market had some concerns on the economic slowdown which was also reported by the IMF," said Argonaut Securities analyst Hel...

Oil slips from 5-month highs as economic worries counter tight market

Image
Oil prices eased on Tuesday, slipping away from 5-month highs reached earlier in the session as a sluggish economic outlook countered an otherwise tight market. International benchmark Brent futures touched their strongest level since last November at $71.34 per barrel on Tuesday, before losing ground to $70.96 per barrel by 0158 GMT, down 14 cents, or 0.2 percent, from their last close. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures also hit a November 2018 high, at $64.77 per barrel, before easing to $64.36, 4 cents below their last settlement. Despite generally bullish oil markets, concerns that an economic slowdown this year will hit fuel consumption have been preventing crude prices from rising even higher, traders said. And while fears of a global recession ebbed following strong U.S. jobs figures and improved Chinese manufacturing data late last week, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said there was still a "significant slowing in growth globally...
