Thanks to indelectable macro data, appetite for fresh investments is low

Image
Market participants had a tough time digesting the slew of negative macroeconomic data served over the weekend. And, the sharp fall in Indian stock market indices mirrors that pain very well. The Nifty and the Sensex shed more than 2% each on Tuesday, pushing the fear gauge India VIX (volatility index) up 11% to the 18-mark. Global cues weren’t very supportive either, with the Asian markets closing on a mixed note. But the decline in Indian stocks was largely due to domestic concerns. Analysts say while the market may have factored in most of the poor data, fresh buying may not come in a hurry. “There are media reports that the government may sell its stake in BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corp.) to IOC (Indian Oil Corp.), which has further weighed on sentiments because this route of privatization will weaken the buying profit-making government entity. Investors feel that the government’s actions in responding to economic woes are not sufficient. They also need to be more ...

US stocks rose on Monday, following a sharp sell-off in the prior session, after US President Donald Trump predicted a trade deal with China, cooling investor concerns after a ramp-up in rhetoric derailed markets last week. Following the G7 summit of world leaders in Biarritz, France, Trump said he believed China was sincere about the desire to reach a deal, citing what he described as increasing economic pressure on Beijing and job losses there. Shares of tariff-sensitive companies rose in response. Apple Inc’s 1.90% gain provided the biggest boost to each of the major indexes. Chipmakers, which are heavily reliant upon China for revenue, also rose. The Philadelphia Semiconductor index added 0.86% after slumping more than 4% on Friday. Still, market par...

Oil falls as trade war raises recession fears

Image
Oil prices fell on Monday, pushing U.S. crude to its lowest in more than two weeks, as an intensifying U.S.-China trade war knocked confidence in the global economy. Brent crude was down 63 cents, or 1.1%, at $58.71 a barrel by 0232 GMT, having earlier touched $58.24, the lowest since Aug. 15. U.S. oil was down 68 cents, or 1.3%, to $53.49 a barrel, having earlier fallen to $52.96, the lowest since Aug. 9. Concerns about an economic slowdown are being fanned by a ratcheting up of trade tensions between the United States and China. China's commerce ministry said late last week it would impose additional tariffs of 5% or 10% on a total of 5,078 products originating from the United States, including crude oil, agricultural products such as soybeans, and small aircraft. In retaliation, President Donald Trump said he was ordering U.S. companies to look at ways to close operations in China and make products in the United States. "The only thing that...

A morning walk down Dalal Street | Stiff resistance for Nifty at 11,100-11,200

Image
It sees some resistance near 5-DEMA. The recent reform measures introduced by the govt could result in a kneejerk reaction. The Nifty50 which closed with losses of about 2 percent for the week ended August 23 could see a strong opening when the market will resume trading on August 26 after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s booster shot for the economy. However, the gains might be capped, as the US President Donald Trump escalated the trade war as he announced a wave of higher tariffs on Chinese goods & services. Trump said existing 25% tariffs on some $250 billion in imports from China would rise to 30% come Oct. 1, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Trump’s move, announced on Twitter, came hours after China unveiled retaliatory tariffs on $75 billion worth of U.S. goods, prompting the president earlier in the day to demand U.S. companies move their operations out of China, said a Reuters report. The Indian ma...

Nifty likely to open with a gap of more than 100 points on Monday after FM booster shot

Image
The finance minister unveiled measures to boost or improve investor and business sentiment. The Nifty50 which closed with losses of about 2 percent for the week ended August 23 could see a strong opening when the market will resume trading on August 26 after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s booster shot for the economy. In light of slowdown fears, the finance minister unveiled measures to boost or improve investor and business sentiment. A rollback in recent tax hikes on foreign and domestic investors, infusion of Rs 70,000 cr in state-run banks, a key measure to announce auto sector, are some of the measures to boost growth in Asia’s third-largest economy. The government also outlined measures to support the NBFC sector and small businesses to calm the nerves of investors ahead of the upcoming festival season. Why the Future Retail-Amazon deal brought little joy for investors

Image
Investors should have been overjoyed when Future Retail Ltd finally announced its deal with Amazon. For many months now, news reports were abuzz about the company’s deal with the American e-commerce behemoth. Yet, when Future Retail said that Amazon will buy 49% in Future Coupons Ltd, which holds Future Retail warrants amounting to about 7.3% stake on conversion, the Future Retail stock declined by 4.6% on the National Stock Exchange. This is when, according to news reports and analysts, the transaction is said to have taken place at a significant premium to the warrant issue price of 505. Future Retail’s press release offers no insight on the deal value. “We arrive at an implied acquisition price of 773, a 53.2% premium to the warrant conversion price," said analysts from Edelweiss Securities Ltd in a report on 23 August. This assumes that the balance 1,500 crore needed from Future Coupons to buy the warrants is the same amount that Amazon would have inves...

The Zambian government is determined to "urgently secure" an investor for Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) once the court processes over the disputed liquidation of the mine are concluded, the mines minister said on Thursday. "Government is determined, once the court processes are concluded to urgently secure a credible investor in an open and transparent manner." Dorimalai mine loss is a body blow for NMDC

Image
NMDC Ltd’s loss of the Dorimalai mine in Karnataka has cast a shadow over its business model and could further hurt the stock’s valuation.  NMDC shares have already lost 12.7% of their value in the past two days due to the state government’s move. The Karnataka government’s cancellation of the mine lease to NMDC will not only reduce the mining giant’s capacity but also increase its cost of acquiring a new lease. The state government is likely to offer the mine under e-auction again, which could raise its bidding cost. Earlier, NMDC had halted production at the mine after the state government renewed the lease with a condition of payment of 80% of the sale value as lease rental. NMDC won an appeal in the high court and the order was set aside. Production at the mine was expected to resume soon. However, the state government has once again cancelled the allotment and put up the mine for e-auction. The Donimalai mine contributes about 6mtpa capacity or around...
