Tough times in the market often keep the traders on the fence. The riskiness, especially in Option Trade, is two dimensional with an unfavourable directional move or no move hitting hard. While there are standard strategies defined in the books for dealing with no move or directional move in isolation, none of them deals with both of them simultaneously. Let us examine both these issues and figure out how a modified butterfly turns out to be a cheaper alternative to this peculiar situation. Now, consider a situation where the indices have made at least two similar and proximal highs and lows, giving us an indication that there is a range that the indices might get stuck into. In such a situation, the next round of upward or downward gyration is expected to be played with. For this, a ...

Podcast | Stock picks of the day: Hold Nifty Longs with strict stop loss of 10,900

Image
Any close above 11,200 would trigger short-covering rally towards 11,287 and 11,440. For the last nine trading sessions, Nifty has been gradually moving up. Nifty has seen a fall of 1,321 odd points from the all-time high of 12,103, registered on June 3, to the recent low of 10,782. By joining daily lows, upward sloping trend line projects the strong support at 10,900 odd levels. If we were to take 38.2 percent and 50 percent retracements of this entire swing, it comes at 11,287 and 11,440. Nifty is currently placed below its 20, 50, 100 and 200 DMA. The index has been maintaining lower tops and lower bottoms on the daily and weekly charts. This setup indicates that the overall trend has been bearish for Nifty. The 20 days EMA (11,138) and 200 DMA (11,183) are the near-term hurdles for the Nifty. After the budget day, Nifty attempted crossing 20 days EMA but failed to do so. On August 19, also, Nifty found resistance on its 20 days EMA. Considering...

Image

Tata Steel slipped over 2 percent intraday on August 8, a day after it reported a steep 64.3 percent year-on-year (YoY) decline in June quarter profit at Rs 693 crore amid muted revenue growth and subdued operating income. The profit in the corresponding quarter last year was Rs 1,940.8 crore. Lower other income (down 29 percent YoY) also impacted the bottom line. Revenue during the quarter grew 1.27 percent YoY to Rs 35,947.1 crore, dented by lower domestic and Europe growth. It was supported by Tata Steel BSL (erstwhile Bhushan Steel acquired under NCLT) which grew 105.5 percent YoY to Rs 4,332.73 crore in Q1FY20. Reacting to the news, CLSA maintained its sell rating on Tata Steel but slashed its target price to Rs 320 from Rs 395 earlier. Fall in margin took a toll on the financial performance of Tata Steel. The standalone margin held up on a ...
