Podcast | Stock picks of the day: Nifty likely to see a bounceback towards 11,050 –11,150 levels

Image
If Nifty has to regain any strength, the bank index needs to step up. Hence, one needs to closely watch how banking conglomerates perform in the coming week. The market witnessed selling pressure, which pushed the Nifty below the 10,650 marks on August 23. Fortunately, strong buying emerged at lower levels in the following hour and thereafter, the index saw a V-shaped recovery to not only trim all losses but also to enter the positive territory and reclaim the 10,800 marks. We are trading in an extremely oversold zone and reached crucial February lows around 10,600. Technically, we can see the formation of ‘Bullish Piercing’ pattern on the daily chart (in Nifty). The said pattern will show its significance once the index manages to sustain above 10,900. In this scenario, we can expect further recovery towards 11,050–11,150. If Nifty has to regain any strength, the bank index needs to step up. Hence, one needs to closely watch how banking conglomerates perf...

Gold set for worst week in about five months; Powell`s speech in focus

Image
Gold eased on Friday and was set for its worst week in nearly five months, as lack of clarity from U.S. Federal Reserve on the outlook for interest rate cuts triggered investors to cash in some gains ahead of Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole. Spot gold was down 0.3% to $1,494.60 per ounce as of 0400 GMT. The metal has lost nearly 1.3% so far this week, on track for its biggest weekly percentage decline since March 29. U.S. gold futures slipped 0.3% at $1,504.20 an ounce. The market is closely watching Fed Chairman Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole seminar due later in the day (1400 GMT) for clarity on monetary policy after minutes of the U.S. central bank's July meeting tempered hopes of aggressive rate cuts. "There is no clear direction on what the Fed is doing, so people are on the sidelines until they hear concrete answers," said Brian Lan, managing director at dealer GoldSilver Central in Singapore. "Some people are...

SpiceJet`s yields disappoint, other income boosts profit in June quarter

Image
After InterGlobe Aviation Ltd reported 13% growth in yields for the June quarter, investors were probably expecting smaller peer, SpiceJet Ltd, to follow suit. InterGlobe Aviation runs IndiGo, the country’s largest airline by market share. Unfortunately, that hasn’t played out. Paarth Gala, associate (institutional research) at Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt. Ltd said SpiceJet’s yield for the June quarter increased by just 2% year-on-year. Broadly, this is a tad below Street expectations. As such, Gala was expecting it to increase by 3%. “The airline’s operations remained stressed for a large portion of this quarter due to the continued grounding of its superior B737 MAX aircraft," highlighted the management in the investor presentation. This limited the airline’s ability to take its yields up, owing to passenger disruptions and re-accommodation; while simultaneously increasing its fixed costs on this category of aircraft, added the company. Even so, SpiceJet cloc...

What is the way out of the current slowdown?

Image
Substitution of a large part of our import basket by indigenous manufacturing and attracting FDI in select large projects with predictable return could kickstart a virtuous cycle. Monetary stimulus so far has had little impact The current slowdown is more structural than cyclical India bypassing manufacturing to a service-led economy has hurt job creation Make in India should be taken up on a war footing The focus should be on the substitution of imports by domestic manufacturing Identity large projects, provide all clearances and invite FDI with a predictable return This could help start a virtuous cycle The economic slowdown is clearly the talk of the town from boardrooms to bazaars. While financial markets and businesses are looking to the government to salvage the situation which is now hurting industries ranging from automobiles to soaps, shampoos and biscuits, nobody really knows what is needed to come out of the mess. Monetary stimul...

Image
The Enforcement Directorate charge sheet against IL&FS and the cabal which ran it gives the full scope and extent of the malfeasance and all-pervasive rot.  Pertinently, it refers to the closed user group individually and by name and provides details on their conduct. The conclusion is that it was pretty much a circus with Ravi Parthasarthy as the ringmaster or even King as the rest of the crew played courtiers. In what used to be a virtual command performance more or less every day, the courtiers used to play to the gallery and try and please the Emperor. The ED applying PMLA has indicted each and every member of the claque for contravention of the Money Laundering Act.  The scathing denouement of the modus operandi states The accused named in connivance and collusion with each other, indulged in initially locating and identifying dubious companies which claimed to have been engaged in infrastructure development and later issuing fictitious purchase or...

By applying concepts like Time cycles, Channels and indicators like RSI or the Relative Strength Index, one can still derive amazing trades from these stocks.
