How a shadow banking crisis sent India`s autos sector into a tailspin

Image
Sudhir Gharpure and his sales team sat chatting at a big Maruti Suzuki dealership on the outskirts of Mumbai some two hours after its doors were opened on a recent Saturday morning - not a single customer was in sight. "There used to be close to 15-20 bookings each day, but now we're down to 3-5 on good days," said Gharpure, the general manager at the dealership. Gharpure's experience is not an isolated one. Across India dealerships are being pushed out of business and the Indian auto sector is going through its biggest slump in nearly two decades. Passenger vehicle sales fell for eight straight months until June, and in May sales dropped 20.55% - the sharpest recorded fall in 18 years. Preliminary data indicates passenger vehicle sales may have plunged as much as 30 percent in July. The slump in India, along with a simultaneous slide in Chinese auto sales, is a blow for automakers wrestling with higher costs driven by more stringent emission norms...

Infosys, Wipro and many other companies to be hit by new buyback tax

Image
The decision by India’s government to impose a tax on stock buybacks puts the brakes on what could have been another great year for share repurchases. More than 70 companies, including software exporter Wipro Ltd., announced or completed 354.6 billion ($5.2 billion) of share buybacks in the first half of 2019, data compiled by Bloomberg show. That’s about two thirds of the 546 billion of such transactions for all of 2018, which was the most in at least six years, the data show. “In the last three years, buybacks had supported the rally in stocks and helped improve the earnings per share for companies," said Umesh Mehta, head of research at Samco Securities Ltd. in Mumbai. “That opportunity is now closed. Companies would now have to move back to distributing dividends, where the tax liability is lower." Taxing Times The proposed tax may affect share purchases worth 100 billion that are in progress. Infosys Ltd., India’s second-largest provider of IT ser...

Gold sprints to over five-year peak after Fed hints at rate cuts

Image
Gold prices surged as much as 1.8% to their highest in more than five years on Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve signalled possible interest rate cuts later this year, sending the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields lower. Spot gold jumped 1.4% to $1,378.70 per ounce as of 0252 GMT, after hitting its highest since March 17, 2014 at $1,383.81. U.S. gold futures surged 2.5% to $1,382.70 an ounce. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday said it was ready to battle growing global and domestic economic risks with interest rate cuts beginning as early as next month, as it took stock of rising trade tensions and growing concerns about weak inflation. Lower interest rates decrease the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion and weigh on the dollar, making gold cheaper for investors holding other currencies. "The weakness in the dollar seen due to the rate cut expectations and a lot of short covering due to the sudden jump in prices are behind the sharp move...

Oil extends gains amid Middle East tensions, U.S.-China trade deal hopes

Image
Oil prices climbed on Wednesday, extending sharp gains from the previous session on rekindled hopes for a U.S.-China trade deal and on continued tensions in the Middle East after tanker attacks there last week. Brent crude futures were up 34 cents, or 0.6%, at $62.48 a barrel by 0028 GMT. They rose 2% on Tuesday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 44 cents, or 0.8%, to $54.34 a barrel. The U.S. benchmark surged 3.8% in the last session. In a post on Twitter, U.S. President Donald Trump said preparations were starting for him to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Osaka next week. Interaction between the two sides since then has been limited, and Trump has threatened, repeatedly, to slap more tariffs on Chinese products in an escalation...

Gold set for first monthly gain in four on Trump tariff threat, Fed cut hopes

Image
Gold prices rose on Friday, heading towards their first monthly gain since January on increased safe-haven demand, after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to levy tariffs on all Mexican imports, ratcheting up concerns of a global economic slowdown. The new threat of tariffs on Mexico, coupled with a string of soggy economic data from the United States this month and the long-drawn Sino-U.S. trade war, also translated into increased bets that the U.S. Federal Reserve could cut interest rates this year. Spot gold was up 0.2% at $1,290.68 per ounce at 0322 GMT. It has risen about 0.6% so far this month. The metal is also on track for a second consecutive weekly gain, up about 0.4% over the week. Turmeric, which holds antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has been gaining in popularity among health-conscious consumers around the world in recent years. But it is still predominantly used in a variety of tangy Indian curries, aromatic biryani, and other food products. Indians also consider turmeric auspicious and it is smeared onto the faces of both the bride and groom ahead of weddings in a ceremony meant to bring good health. This year's bumper crop is the result of a boom in last year's planting after prices soared in 2018 due to lower output and depleted stocks. Now, prices have slumped nearly 24 percent since the beginning of 2019 thanks to mounting stocks at wholesale markets. "Turmer...
