NCLT says it has authority to ban Deloitte, BSR

Image
In a major blow to the defaulting company IL&FS' auditors Deloitte and BSR and Associates, the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Friday said that it has jurisdiction over these firms and the authority to ban them under the Companies Act for their alleged role in financial misappropriation. Deloitte Haskins and Sells (Deloitte) and global advisory firm KPMG arm BSR had challenged the NCLT's jurisdiction to prosecute the companies and ban them after the Corporate Affairs Ministry (MCA) had sought such a five-year ban on them.  The tribunal said that the order is "appealable" and it was aware of the fact that the case could move ahead to the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal and the Supreme Court.  Both the audit companies have been under the MCA's scanner after the probe by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) found that Deloitte had disregarded the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) regulations and t...

HCL Tech beats growth estimates, but profitability is a niggling worry

Image
Shares of HCL Technologies Ltd lost about 10% since its March quarter results, underperforming the Nifty IT index, due to concerns over growth and profitability. The June quarter results will reassure investors to some extent. Constant currency revenues grew 4.2% from the March quarter, better than the most optimistic estimate on the Street. From a year ago, they are up 17%, the highest in recent years. Excluding the benefit of a recent acquisition, sequential revenue growth stood at 3.8%, which is healthy. However, the benefit of revenue acceleration was negated by a steep fall in profitability to 17.1%. It is down a good 1.8 percentage points from the March quarter. As a consequence, operating earnings (earnings before interest and tax ) in dollar terms fell 6.3% sequentially. “Management already guided that Q1 margins will be weak owing to IBM products acquisition led transition costs while revenues would be absent and flow only from Q2. However, the quantum of margi...

Revenue is expected to rise 8-9 percent YoY, backed by cigarette and FMCG segment, brokerages said. The volume growth for cigarettes could be around 5-6 percent in Q1FY20 on the lower base of 1.5 percent growth in Q1fy19. The volume growth in the March quarter was 7.5 percent. Dr Reddy`s generic drugs business keeps up the pace, but earnings lag

Image
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd’s June quarter results, released after the market hours, lagged the Street’s estimates. Revenue grew 3% year-on-year in the June quarter. Operating earnings and net profit jumped 41-45% from a year ago. But, excluding the 346 crores non-recurring revenue the company’s received from a settlement, operating earnings and net profit will be lower from the year-ago levels. This is a significant variation to the double-digit earnings growth the Street was projecting. On the positive side, Dr Reddy’s India business did well along expected lines. Domestic revenue grew 15% from a year ago. New product launches and growth in existing business helped the company. Europe also did well, clocking 19% revenue growth. Comparatively, the 3% revenue expansion in North America was muted. But, as analysts say, the 9% sequential growth in revenue was decent, especially considering the rupee appreciation in the previous quarter. Even so, revenue growth i...

Product quality issues find their way into rising costs at Tata Motors

Image
Tata Motors Ltd’s shares fell 4% on Wednesday, reacting to foreign brokerage CLSA’s call to “sell" the stock as cost concerns continued in a weak demand environment. However, a spark of hope with news of improved Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sales in some regions saw the stock recover slightly. JLR, the British subsidiary that contributes 75% of the consolidated revenue, largely drives sentiment for the stock. CLSA’s recent report said that warranty expenses and provisions ratio were at a nine-year high in FY19. Consolidated warranty expenses, which are mainly reflective of JLR’s costs, rose significantly in FY19. They stood at 3.9% as a percentage of consolidated revenue, higher than earlier years. This has raised concerns over and above the existing problems of high fixed assets vis-à-vis sales, negative free cash flows and high automotive debt. Rising warranty expenses have also raised questions about product quality. “In addition to industry issues of lower gr...
