Gold soars 2% after Powell speech, Trump tweets

Image
Gold surged 2% on Friday as investors interpreted U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech as leaning toward a dovish monetary policy stance and President Donald Trump's latest comments exacerbated trade tensions with China. Spot gold rose 1.9% at $1,526.60 an ounce by 14:08 pm EDT (1801 GMT), shaking off slight headwinds ahead of the Fed Chair's speech. Prices earlier rose to $1,528.79, the highest since Aug. 13, when spot gold had scaled a six-year peak of $1,534.31. U.S. gold futures settled up 1.9% to $1,537.60. "The fact that he (Powell) said that they (the Fed) will act appropriately to sustain expansion is pretty bullish for gold. The two primary tools they have are quantitative easing (QE) or lower rates - both those tools will cause gold to go higher," said Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at RJO Futures. "The move this morning is just more people buying gold simply with the expectations that intere...

Gold steady, focus on Jackson Hole summit for rate-cut direction

Image
Gold prices were little changed on Thursday, holding above the key $1,500 an ounce level, as investors awaited the Federal Reserve chair's speech at a global central bankers' conclave for clues on future U.S. interest rate cuts. Spot gold inched down 0.1% to $1,500.14 per ounce by 0426 GMT. U.S. gold futures were down 0.4% at $1,510.10 an ounce. "We are seeing a holding pattern until the remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the Jackson Hole symposium," OANDA analyst Jeffrey Halley said. If Powell says they are going to cut rates aggressively, that may not be great for gold in the short-term since equities will gain, Halley added. Markets are now focused on Powell's speech at Jackson Hole on Friday, for clarity on the direction of U.S. monetary policy, especially after an inversion in the Treasury yield curve highlighted the risk that the U.S. economy may fall into recession. Minutes of the Fed's July meeting, rele...

Oil rises on European stock draw despite demand slowdown forecast

Image
Oil prices rose more than $1 a barrel on Friday, supported by a drop in European inventories and OPEC output cuts despite the International Energy Agency reporting demand growth at its lowest since the financial crisis of 2008. Brent crude futures gained $1.15, or 2%, to settle at $58.53 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose $1.96, or 3.7%, to settle at $54.50 a barrel. "Despite a further cut in oil demand growth by the IEA, oil prices are trading marginally higher, as the demand growth cut was already announced previously by the head of the IEA and the agency still expects larger inventory draws for 2H19," said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo. The IEA said global oil demand to May from January grew at its slowest since 2008, hurt by mounting signs of an economic slowdown and a ramping up of the U.S.-China trade war. Oil prices rose after Euroilstock data showed total crude and product inventories of 16 European nations in July ...

Gold rises as markets brace for Fed meeting

Gold prices gained on Monday ahead of this week's U.S. Federal Reserve monetary policy meeting, which is expected to lead to a cut in U.S. interest rates. FUNDAMENTALS Spot gold was up 0.4% at $1,423.49 per ounce, as of 0121 GMT. U.S. gold futures gained 0.3% to $1,423.20 an ounce. Market participants are now awaiting the U.S. central bank's July 30-31 monetary policy meeting, where it is expected to trim its interest rate by at least 25 basis points. Interest rate futures are fully priced for a quarter-point rate cut from the Fed on Wednesday, with only a small chance of a half-point move. U.S. economic growth slowed less than expected in the second quarter according to a Commerce Department report on Friday, making the Fed less likely to cut rates by 50 basis points given the economic improvement. Better than expected U.S. data lifted the dollar to a two-month high versus a basket of currencies on Friday, and held firm near that level on Monday. ...

Gold ticks up on Iran tensions; firmer dollar limits upside

Image
Spot gold was up 0.2% at $1,427.26 per ounce as of 0322 GMT. The metal hit $1,452.60 in the previous session, its highest since May 2013, before closing 1.5% lower. Gold prices gained on Monday following a steep fall in the previous session as tensions in the Middle East and weaker financial markets supported the metal, while a stronger dollar kept a lid on gains. Spot gold was up 0.2% at $1,427.26 per ounce as of 0322 GMT. The metal hit $1,452.60 in the previous session, its highest since May 2013, before closing 1.5% lower. U.S. gold futures were up 0.1% at $1,428.50 an ounce. "Over the weekend, what happened between Iran and the United Kingdom is supporting gold prices today," said Brian Lan, managing director at dealer GoldSilver Central in Singapore. "Also, equities are lower and at this point of time with geo-political tensions and the Fed looking to cut rates, gold looks attractive, but people are worried about the stronger dollar....

Oil down for a second day as U.S. Gulf of Mexico output returns

Image
Oil prices fell for a second day on Tuesday as more production facilities returned to operation in the U.S. Gulf after Hurricane Barry swept through over the weekend, while Chinese economic data dimmed the outlook for crude demand. Brent crude futures were down 10 cents, or 0.2%, at $66.38 a barrel by 0028 GMT. They fell 0.4% overnight. U.S. crude fell by 10 cents, or 0.2% to $59.48 a barrel. The U.S. benchmark fell about 1% in the previous session. Both contracts last week made their biggest weekly gains in three weeks as U.S. oil inventories fell and diplomatic tensions rose in the Middle East. But as producers on Monday began restoring some of the nearly 74% of output that was shut at U.S. Gulf of Mexico platforms ahead of Hurricane Barry, concerns about oversupply returned to the fore. And while Chinese data on Monday showed industrial output and retail data beat expectations, overall figures showed the country's slowest quarterly economic growth in ...

Gold steady as investors eye US retail sales data

Image
Spot gold was mostly unchanged at $1,413.20 per ounce, as of 0306 GMT. Gold prices held steady on Tuesday as investors awaited U.S. retail sales data that could serve as an indicator of the strength of the world's largest economy amid lingering concerns over global economic slowdown. Spot gold was mostly unchanged at $1,413.20 per ounce, as of 0306 GMT. U.S. gold futures were up 0.1% at $1,414.90 an ounce. "Today we are sought of getting neutralised because we are heading into retail sales tonight. Investors are positioning realising there could be a knee-jerk reaction lower again if retail sales numbers come out strong," said Stephen Innes, managing partner, Vanguard Markets. However, "I don't think it (retail sales data) is going to make a huge difference in overall scheme of things as far as the Fed narrative goes," Innes added. The U.S. data, due later in the day, is expected to imply that retail sales had edged up 0.1% in...

China June crude oil throughput rises to record on new plants

Image
China's crude oil throughput rose to a record in June, up 7.7% from a year earlier, following the start-up of two new, large refineries, official data showed on Monday. Crude processing volumes last month reached 53.7 million tonnes, or about 13.07 million barrels per day (bpd), beating the previous record in April of 12.68 million bpd, according to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The hefty processing rates were supported by the start up of two major new refineries. Private firm Hengli Petrochemical ramped up its 400,000-bpd refinery in Dalian to full capacity in late May and Zhejiang Petrochemical began trial runs at a similar-sized facility on the east coast. "The high output data was mainly due to the two new plants, but still the figure exceeds our estimates as many refineries were shut for maintenance," said Wang Zhao, an analyst with Sublime Information Co, a local consultancy, based in Zibo in eastern China's Shandong p...

Gold rises on fresh trade tensions, Fed rate cut bets

Image
Gold prices rose on Friday and were on track to post a weekly gain, consolidating above $1,400 as renewed Sino-U.S. trade tensions amid global growth jitters and prospects of an interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve stoked safe-haven demand. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $1,407.69 per ounce as of 0426 GMT. Gold has risen nearly 0.6% so far this week. U.S. gold futures were up 0.2% at $1,409.90 an ounce. "We have a slightly weaker U.S. dollar, tensions in the Middle East and once again, prolonged trade dispute between the U.S. and China, which are all supportive," said Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist, CMC Markets. Fed Chair Jerome Powell indicated on Thursday that a rate cut is likely at the Fed's next meeting as businesses slow investment due to trade disputes and a global growth slowdown. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said China was not living up to promises it made on buying agricultural products from American farmers. ...

Podcast | Stock picks of the day: Bulls to remain in control as long as Nifty trades above 11,750 levels

Image
A bullish trend could push the Nifty towards 11,950. Going forward, a sustained trade above 11,950 may induce a rally towards 12,100-12,250 levels. The Nifty traded in a narrow range throughout the session on Wednesday before closing flat near the high of the candle. Over the past couple of weeks, the index has been consolidating between 11,650 and 11,900 levels, indicating short-term consolidation. On the weekly time frame, the benchmark index is trading in a higher high-higher low formation, which is a clue that the buying on dips strategy will work in the current market set up. In the market, IT stocks ended the session as the worst performer, whereas state-run bank outperformed the benchmark index. The volatility index -- India VIX -- witnessed a fall of 4.92 percent during the day. On the options front, 12,500 and 12,000 Calls added most open interest (OI), whereas 11,900 and 11,700 Puts were the most active. The bias is expected to remain positive ...

Gold subdued as focus shifts to US-China trade talks

Image
Prices fell more than 1% in the previous session after U.S. Federal Reserve officials dented expectations of aggressive interest rate cuts. Gold prices were little changed on Thursday following a steep fall in the previous session, as investors waited on any Sino-U.S. trade developments later this week, while bulls rolled back hopes of big U.S. interest rate cuts. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $1,407.25 per ounce at 0350 GMT. Prices fell more than 1% in the previous session after U.S. Federal Reserve officials dented expectations of aggressive interest rate cuts. U.S. gold futures were 0.3% lower at $1,411 an ounce. "There appears to be some fatigue around preannouncements on the trade issues ... If we don't see any sort of agreement, then we can see support for gold coming back, but in the meantime that modulation is expected to weigh on gold prices," said Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist, CMC Markets. "This looks like a corre...

India`s gold demand could fall to three-year low as prices hit record high

Image
India's gold demand could fall 10% in 2019 from a year ago to the lowest level in three years as a rally in local prices to a record high dents retail purchases during a key festive season, the head of an industry body told Reuters. Lower purchases by India, the world's second biggest consumer after China, could limit a rally in global prices that hit a 6-year high earlier this week. "Of late, customers are not used to such a jump in prices," Anantha Padmanabhan, chairman of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) told Reuters by telephone. "They will not raise allocations to buy gold just because prices have risen. Volume-wise demand will drop 10% from last year." India's gold consumption eased 1.5% in 2018 to 760.4 tonnes, below a 10-year average of 838 tonnes, according to data compiled by the World Gold Council. Local gold prices hit a record 35,960 rupees per 10 grams on Tuesday, having jumped more than 10 ...
