Gold little changed as traders seek clarity on trade war direction

Image
Gold prices were largely steady on Tuesday, retreating from an over six-year peak hit in the previous session, as U.S. President Donald Trump signalled a possible reconciliation with China, calming worries about an escalation in their trade war. Spot gold was up 0.1% to $1,528.10 per ounce, as of 0347 GMT. Gold prices on Monday surged to their highest in more than six years, surpassing the $1,550 mark in early trade, before paring gains after Washington and Beijing indicated a possible thaw in their trade spat. The non-yielding bullion is often seen as a safer investment during times of political and financial uncertainty. U.S. gold futures were up 0.1% to $1,538 an ounce. "Prices are steady because of the conciliatory tone both China and Trump sounded yesterday; the market started to hope that there is some deal coming out of the trade dispute," said Helen Lau, analyst, Argonaut Securities. Lau added that hopes for monetary policy easing by ce...

Oil rises on European stock draw despite demand slowdown forecast

Image
Oil prices rose more than $1 a barrel on Friday, supported by a drop in European inventories and OPEC output cuts despite the International Energy Agency reporting demand growth at its lowest since the financial crisis of 2008. Brent crude futures gained $1.15, or 2%, to settle at $58.53 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose $1.96, or 3.7%, to settle at $54.50 a barrel. "Despite a further cut in oil demand growth by the IEA, oil prices are trading marginally higher, as the demand growth cut was already announced previously by the head of the IEA and the agency still expects larger inventory draws for 2H19," said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo. The IEA said global oil demand to May from January grew at its slowest since 2008, hurt by mounting signs of an economic slowdown and a ramping up of the U.S.-China trade war. Oil prices rose after Euroilstock data showed total crude and product inventories of 16 European nations in July ...

Beijing says millions of tonnes of U.S. soy shipped to China, U.S. data reflects less

Image
Chinese state media said on Sunday the United States has shipped several million tonnes of soybeans to China since the two countries' leaders met in June, although U.S. government data shows that the volume was much less. The U.S.-China trade war has curbed the export of U.S. crops to China, with soybean sales falling sharply after Beijing slapped tariffs of 25% on American cargoes. China has made enquiries to U.S. suppliers for the purchase of soybeans, cotton, pork, sorghum and other agricultural products since July 19, and some sales have been made, state broadcaster CCTV said, citing China's National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Commerce. "As long as the American agricultural products are reasonably priced and of good quality, it is expected that there will be new purchases," the report said. Companies involved in the sales have applied for exclusions to tariffs on agricultural goods with Chinese customs officials, it s...

'Budget 2019 triggers beginning of the end of the liquidity crisis'

Image
At lower levels, one should go contrarian and accumulate stocks for long term earnings growth potential. Financial market reaction to the budget has been mixed while bond and currency market has shown enthusiasm, the share market has turned nervous. Participants who were expecting measures that would propel the earnings growth of listed companies in a hurry are surely disappointed. The rise in the tax rate for ultra HNI has not gone well as they are also the key market participants. Also, some impact on valuation multiple is feared as promoters stake has to come down gradually. But we need to understand that the era of ‘budget investing’ is over and should not extrapolate the immediate budget impact to derive long term market direction. Possible sell-off is not due to any de-rating in earnings or earning quality but due to multiple stabilisations. At lower levels, one should go contrarian and accumulate stocks for long term earnings growth potential. This first budg...

India`s annual coal demand rises 9.1% to nearly 1 billion tonnes: Minister

Image
India's annual coal demand rose 9.1% to 991.35 million tonnes during the year ended March 2019, India's Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi told the country's parliament on Monday. Coal is among the top five commodities imported by India, one of biggest importers of the fuel despite having the world's fifth largest reserves. Consumption by India's utilities, which accounted for three-fourths of the total demand, rose 6.6% to 760.66 million tonnes, Joshi said in a written response to a question in the upper house of the parliament. Imports rose to 235.24 million tonnes in 2018-19 from 208.27 million tonnes in 2017-18, Joshi said, adding that domestic supplies rose to 734.23 million tonnes during the year ended March 2019. India's supply shortfall more than doubled to 23.35 million tonnes, mainly because of state-run Coal India's inability to cater to demand from the cement and sponge iron industries. Demand from the cement sector rose 70% ...

Gold recovers as U.S.-China trade jitters sour risk appetite

Image
Gold prices rose on Wednesday after hitting a one-week low in the previous session, as worries over U.S.-China trade war flared up, curbing risk appetite and increasing the appeal of safe-haven bullion. Spot gold rose 0.5% to $1,333.06 by 0328 GMT, after falling to its lowest since June 3 at $1,319.35 in the previous session. U.S. gold futures were up 0.4% at $1,336.60 an ounce. "Market sentiment this morning is very cautious and risk appetite has started to diminish gently, therefore we see a little bit of buying in gold," said Benjamin Lu, an analyst with Singapore-based Phillip Futures. Asian stock markets got off to a guarded start as both warring factions in the Sino-U.S. trade tussle engaged in another round of heated exchanges. U.S. President Donald Trump defended the use of tariffs as part of his trade strategy, while China vowed a tough response if Washington insists on escalating trade tensions amid ongoing negotiations. Trump a...

Shell ships long-awaited first LNG cargo from Australia`s Prelude

Image
Royal Dutch Shell on Monday shipped the long-awaited first cargo of liquefied natural gas from its massive Prelude floating LNG plant off northwest Australia, sealing the nation's position as the world's top exporter of the fuel. The start-up comes just as spot LNG prices have sunk to their lowest in over three years, with new projects in Australia and the United States boosting global supply while demand in Asia was dented by a mild winter. Prelude is the last of eight LNG plants built on Australia's eastern and northwestern coasts in a $200 billion LNG construction boom over the past decade. Its first cargo had been targeted for 2018, but was delayed by a string of teething problems at the world's biggest floating vessel. The 490-metre long (1,600 ft) ship is longer than four soccer fields and six times bigger than the world's largest aircraft carriers. Shell declined to comment on the cost of Prelude, but consultancy Wood Mackenzie est...

Gold set for best week in 2019 on rate cut views; eyes on U.S. jobs data

Image
Gold prices eased on Friday, but were headed for their best week this year supported by expectations of an interest rate cut by Federal Reserve and heightened global trade conflicts, while investors await U.S. jobs report due later in the session. Spot gold was down 0.2% at $1,332.31 per ounce, as of 0122 GMT, while U.S. gold futures were down 0.4% at $1,337 an ounce. However, gold has gained 2.1% so far this week and is set to post its best weekly percentage gain since early-December. "Optimism that the U.S.-Mexico tariffs may be short-lived is currently fuelling optimism in global markets," Howie Lee, an economist at OCBC Bank, said. "Gold is likely to stay muted through the rest of the day before the release of the non-farm payrolls. Investors want to see the impact on the U.S. jobs market before reassessing the current pessimism." Mexican and U.S. officials held a second day of talks on trade and migration on Thursday amid reports U.S...

Gold steady as global economy fears buoy safe-haven assets

Image
Spot gold was unchanged at $1,279.12 per ounce, as of 0123 GMT, having fallen from Monday's 1-week peak of $1,287.32 in the previous session. Gold held steady on Wednesday as worries about the global economic outlook kept investors focused on safe-haven assets, with no signs of an easing in the Sino-U.S. trade-war. Spot gold was unchanged at $1,279.12 per ounce, as of 0123 GMT, having fallen from Monday's 1-week peak of $1,287.32 in the previous session. U.S. gold futures were up 0.2% at $1,279.70 an ounce. Asian shares stumbled on Wednesday and global bonds rallied as investors fretted over the outlook for world growth with trade tensions between Washington and Beijing showing no signs of abating. U.S. President Donald Trump on a Monday news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he was "not ready to make a deal with China," which came as a fresh blow to hopes of a resolution in the trade war between the two largest econ...

Brent oil firms above $70 as OPEC cuts and sanctions outweigh economic concerns

Image
Brent crude oil prices consolidated above $70 per barrel on Tuesday as supply cuts led by producer club OPEC and U.S. sanctions on Iran's and Venezuela's fuel exports outweighed concerns about an economic slowdown. Front-month Brent crude futures, the international benchmark for oil prices, were at $70.14 at 0218 GMT, 3 cents above the last session's close, when Brent rose 2.1%. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $59.21 per barrel, up 58 cents or 1% from their last close on Friday. WTI did not trade on Monday due to a public holiday in the United States. Prices have been supported by supply cuts led by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) since the start of the year. OPEC and some allies including Russia are due to meet on June 25 and 26 to discuss output policy going forward. "Supply-side issues returned to the fore, with crude oil prices rising strongly," ANZ bank said on Tuesday. Beyo...

Gold eases as dollar nudges up from multi-week lows

Image
Gold prices inched lower on Tuesday, dropping for the first time in four sessions, as the dollar rebounded from multi-week lows after the European Union parliamentary election results and amid simmering Sino-U.S. trade tensions. Markets were mostly subdued in the previous session with the financial markets in the UK and the United States being closed for holidays. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $1,283.29 per ounce, as of 0338 GMT, after touching its highest since May 17 at $1,287.32. U.S. gold futures were down 0.1% at $1,282.30 an ounce. "The price action in gold has been a little bit disappointing and pretty negative. It has not been able to break above $1,290-$1,300 despite the given background of trade tensions, pause in the Fed and volatile equity markets," said Jeffrey Halley, senior market analyst, Asia Pacific at OANDA. "Some of the money flows are moving to bitcoin. Seems like the cryptocurrencies are eating gold for lunch at the moment ....
