Yes Bank needs capital quickly to heal itself, calm investors

Image
Yes Bank Ltd’s shares have had a lousy run this year, losing a whopping 67% since April and underperforming benchmark indices by a massive margin. Indeed, at the current price the stock trades at below its estimated book value for FY20. Even so, analysts are in no hurry to rerate the stock. A new and strong management, and the move to come clean on the toxic level of its loan book hasn’t enthused investors to buy. Scepticism is rampant in the market and the lender’s formal release on Monday stating that these are unfounded concerns shows it knows the market’s sentiment is against it. Analysts at brokerage firm Jefferies India Pvt. Ltd, for instance, have pointed out the bank’s vulnerabilities and questioned its level of capital. “Discussion with market participants leaves us with an impression that the bank may not have come clean on the pool of stressed loans or its impact on the book value. This has created a trust deficit," said Jefferies India in a ...

Gold slips to 1-week low as global slowdown fears ease

Image
Gold prices fell to a more than one-week low on Monday, as stronger-than-expected data from China and a robust start to the U.S. earnings season soothed concerns about global economic slowdown, denting the appeal of bullion. Spot gold edged 0.2 percent lower to $1,288.08 per ounce as of 0330 GMT, having touched $1,286.44, its lowest since April 5, earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures fell 0.3 percent to $1,291 an ounce. "Gold prices have fallen because of improving macro-economic data which is favouring risk-taking," said Margaret Yang, a market analyst with CMC Markets, Singapore. Among positive catalysts in the market are a better-than- expected credit and export growth figures from China, a positive kick-off to the earnings season in the United States and hopes of a U.S.-China trade-spat resolution, Yang added. Asian shares started the week on a firm footing while the safe-haven yen hovered near its lowest level this year. Chinese customs...

Oil prices drop as ECB warns on weaker economy, U.S. supply soars

Image
Oil prices fell on Friday after the European Central Bank (ECB) warned economic weakness would continue and as U.S. crude output and exports chase new records, undermining efforts by producer club OPEC to tighten global markets. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures were at $56.39 per barrel at 0122 GMT, down 27 cents, or 0.5 percent, from their last settlement. Brent crude futures were at $65.96 per barrel, down 34 cents, or 0.5 percent. Financial markets, including crude oil futures, took a hit after ECB President Mario Draghi said on Thursday the economy was in "a period of continued weakness and pervasive uncertainty". Europe's economic weakness comes as growth in Asia is also slowing down. A slowdown in economic growth would also likely result in stalling fuel demand, putting pressure prices. On the supply side, prices have been receiving support this year from output cuts led by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting C...

Image
Gold prices hit a two-week low on Friday as upbeat U.S. economic data boosted the dollar, while mounting concerns over a slowdown in global growth offered support to the safe-haven metal.
