'Many bottom-up opportunities in midcaps; long-term prospects of auto sector good'

Image
One should first start with the asset allocation. Based on risk appetite and investment horizons, one should allocate towards direct equity, equity MFs, debt MFs, FDs and physical assets like gold and real estate, says Lalit Nambiar of UTI MF. I think there are several bottom-up opportunities in the midcap space and perhaps it is even time now to think a bit differently on how much premium one is willing to pay for growth expectations and if that growth is as dependable as it is made out to be, Lalit Nambiar, Executive Vice President and Fund Manager – UTI MF. Edited excerpts: Q: Do you think RBI should have done more in its policy meeting to push growth and investment in the Indian economy? A: My sense is that institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are closer to the ground on actual issues than some of us expect. It is just that they prefer a more gradualist approach. They seem to be quite aware of the fact that the major issue is of tra...

U.S. gold futures were down 0.2 percent at $1,297.20 per ounce. The U.S.-China trade deal appears to be closer to reality, rolling back U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, as Beijing makes pledges on structural economic changes and eliminates retaliatory tariffs, a source briefed on negotiations said on Sunday. "Dollar rose quite considerably last week and brought gold prices down, but we are seeing a reversal of that now (on trade deal prospects)," said Kyle Rodda, a market analyst with IG Markets in Melbourne. "The global economy is still slowing and central banks should in...

Eye on future! Is Warren Buffett's 90/10 investing strategy for Indian investors?

Image
A suitability of 90/10 retirement strategy is further subjected to a willingness to withstand in bear phase and duration between now and retirement period. By Dinesh Rohira Retiring investor in India might often get prompt to adopt Warren Buffett’s investing strategy of aggressive risk tolerance on the face value of earning higher returns. As highlighted in his 2013 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders about his 90/10 strategy with 90 percent allocation going into equity and remaining 10 percent in bond. It significantly paid off over a longer period with stocks earning about 60 percent returns in comparison to 8 percent by bonds on the overall portfolio. The basic fundamental that he intended to cover in his letter revolved around retirement strategy with asset allocation overweighing on equities and overlooking on the emotion among other takeaways. However, adopting this kind strategy comes with a deep understanding of the market and anticipating the...

Facebook Inc (FB) Stock Is Not the One You Should

Image
FREE STOCK TIPS | INDIAN STOCK MARKET CALL ON 9644405056 There’s a bit of unease in the stock market at the moment. Volatility has rebounded from historic lows. And large-cap tech stocks like Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB) have pulled back — albeit modestly — from all-time highs reached after a huge run over the first seven months of 2017. Facebook stock has pulled back 5% over the past few weeks after FB stock hit an all-time high of $175 in late July. Admittedly, there’s room for worry. The U.S. economy is growing, but hardly at a spectacular pace. By several measures, valuations in the broad market are at the highest levels since 2007 — right before the financial crisis. And U.S. equities haven’t had any real sort of real pullback since February 2016. But as far as Facebook stock goes, there’s no need for panic or even concern. FB stock remains the only social media stock that matters. Any market pullback that brings the Facebook stock down only creates an opportuni...
