Onion prices rise on supply crunch

Image
Onion prices have soared again. Due to the supply crunch in the last month, prices have doubled across agricultural markets.  In Delhi's Azadpur agricultural market, good quality onion is selling at Rs 30-40 a kg and in retail, Rs 50-60 a kg. On Wednesday, 57 trucks of onion (about 1,200 tonnes) arrived at the Azadpur agriculture market. On Tuesday, only 37 trucks had arrived.  According to traders at the mandi, anything less than 70 trucks will create onion demand-supply gap and increase the price. Onion prices doubled in August due to poor supply, said President of the Association of Onion Merchants Rajendra Sharma.  Following floods in major supplying states, like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, the arrival of onion had shrunk, causing price rise, said a trader at Azadpur Mandi.  At the benchmark Lasalgaon mandi of Nasik (Maharashtra), Asia's largest onion wholesale market, prices have shot up 80 percent to trade at Rs 27-2...

Oil rises on European stock draw despite demand slowdown forecast

Image
Oil prices rose more than $1 a barrel on Friday, supported by a drop in European inventories and OPEC output cuts despite the International Energy Agency reporting demand growth at its lowest since the financial crisis of 2008. Brent crude futures gained $1.15, or 2%, to settle at $58.53 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose $1.96, or 3.7%, to settle at $54.50 a barrel. "Despite a further cut in oil demand growth by the IEA, oil prices are trading marginally higher, as the demand growth cut was already announced previously by the head of the IEA and the agency still expects larger inventory draws for 2H19," said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo. The IEA said global oil demand to May from January grew at its slowest since 2008, hurt by mounting signs of an economic slowdown and a ramping up of the U.S.-China trade war. Oil prices rose after Euroilstock data showed total crude and product inventories of 16 European nations in July ...

Surprise or disappointment in Q1: Here's how top companies have performed this week

Image
Experts say that there is a possibility double-digit earnings growth could be seen after the September quarter. We are in the middle of earnings season and top companies have already announced their June quarter numbers. FMCG majors including ITC reported profit growth while Britannia Industries reported a marginally fall in profit. With the auto sector in a slump, Mahindra & Mahindra posted a 29 percent year-on-year (YoY) drop due to weak demand across segments. "Unless there is revival happening there would not be any pick up in corporate profitability and earnings. A combination of fiscal measures and monetary measures are required to achieve this," said Joseph Thomas, Head of Research at Emkay Wealth Management. The June quarter is likely to mimic the March quarter with financials leading the growth while consumer discretionary, consumer staples, industrials, material, and real estate could post declining trend sequentially in the top-line growth....
