11-year data suggests bears control D-Street in September; can bulls defy odds?

Image
The Sensex was down 11 per cent in September 2008, 5.4 per cent in 2018 and dropped by 2.1 per cent in the same month in 2011, data from AceEquity shows. Indian markets remained in a bear grip in August and the trend is unlikely to shift towards the bulls with no big triggers expected in September, say experts. The month of September is off to a muted start, with both the Sensex and the Nifty trading below crucial support levels. The Sensex broke below 37,000 and the Nifty 11,000. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the index has given flat to negative returns in September in six of the last 11 years. The index saw a drop of more than 11 percent in September 2008, followed by 2018 when it slipped 5.4 percent, and in 2011 it dropped by 2.1 percent, data from AceEquity shows. Apart from two tall towers witnessed in 2009 and 2010, the gains in September in the 11-year period have not been that inspiring. The index rallied 10.2 percent in 2010, followed by 10.13 pe...

Podcast | Stock picks of the day: Nifty may trade between 10,800 & 11,200 in September series

Image
In case the Nifty breaks below 10,800 and sustains there a couple of times on a closing basis then selling pressure could take the index towards 10,640-10,500 levels. The Nifty witnessed a relief rally on September 4 after the sell-off seen in the previous session. The index reclaimed 10,800 on a closing basis on September 4. Of the Nifty constituents, around 13 stocks are trading above their 50-DMA and 15 stock are sustaining above their 200-DMA. This indicates that the market is in a bear grip as majority of the stocks are trading below the short and long term moving averages. On the higher side, 11,150 Nifty is seen as a supply zone. Currently, the Nifty pack is trading between its 50-EMA and 100-EMA, which is placed at 11,200 and 10,800, respectively, on the weekly timeline. The Nifty is largely trading in a tight 400 points range (10,800-11,200), with RSI moving around 38, projecting a downward picture. History suggests that from November 2018 to ...

Tata Motors extends fall, down 5%; possible contra buy at current levels

Image
The management of Tata Motors is hopeful of recovery in auto sales after the recent measures introduced by the government. A day after falling more than 3 percent, Tata Motors extended its decline on September 4 after the automaker reported a 58 percent decline in domestic passenger vehicle sales in August. The company sold 7,316 units against 17,351 vehicles in the same month in 2018, Tata Motors said in a statement. Shares of the global automaker plunged 5 percent intraday trade on Wednesday and were trading near its 52-week low of Rs 106.20. Tata Motors is already down more than 30 percent in 2019, weighed down poor domestic and JLR sales globally. Tata Motors commercial vehicles business unit president Girish Wagh said subdued demand sentiment due to poor freight availability, lower freight rates and a slowdown in the economy continued to hamper the demand for commercial vehicles. “We are looking forward to a positive impact of the recently announc...

Thanks to indelectable macro data, appetite for fresh investments is low

Image
Market participants had a tough time digesting the slew of negative macroeconomic data served over the weekend. And, the sharp fall in Indian stock market indices mirrors that pain very well. The Nifty and the Sensex shed more than 2% each on Tuesday, pushing the fear gauge India VIX (volatility index) up 11% to the 18-mark. Global cues weren’t very supportive either, with the Asian markets closing on a mixed note. But the decline in Indian stocks was largely due to domestic concerns. Analysts say while the market may have factored in most of the poor data, fresh buying may not come in a hurry. “There are media reports that the government may sell its stake in BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corp.) to IOC (Indian Oil Corp.), which has further weighed on sentiments because this route of privatization will weaken the buying profit-making government entity. Investors feel that the government’s actions in responding to economic woes are not sufficient. They also need to be more ...

Podcast | Stock picks of the day: Immediate support for Nifty placed at 10,700

Image
The immediate support is now placed at 10,700, and a breach of which could trigger a fresh round of selling in the coming sessions. Despite recording a positive close last week, Indian markets opened a tad lower on September 3 and witnessed selling pressure throughout the day to end the session with sharp cuts on the back of heavy selloff seen in the PSU Banks. The Nifty50 failed to hold on to 11,000 levels on a closing basis as fresh short positions created in 10,900 as well as 11,000 call strikes. From the technical front, the Nifty broke its crucial support placed at 10,830 which was the 61.8 percent retracement level of the recent rally seen from 10,640 to 11,140. This is again a bearish signal for the markets moving forward. The immediate support is now placed at 10,700 and a breach of which could trigger a fresh round of selling in the coming sessions. However, on the higher side, 10,900 should act as strong hurdle for the Nifty going forward. ...

Wall Street stalls to end weak August as China tariffs loom

Image
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 41.03 points, or 0.16%, to 26,403.28, the S&P 500 gained 1.88 points, or 0.06%, to 2,926.46 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 10.51 points, or 0.13%, to 7,962.88. Wall Street ended the week with a lackluster session on Friday as investors were cautious ahead of a holiday weekend in which a fresh round of US tariffs on Chinese imports were due to be levied. While the S&P 500 registered its biggest weekly gain since June, August had its biggest monthly decline since May. Investors had fled risky assets in August due to escalations in the US-China trade war and the inversion of a key part of the US yield curve which is often a recessionary signal. US financial markets were due to stay closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday and a new round of US tariffs on some Chinese goods were expected to come into effect on Sunday. Trading volume was light as and the S&P swapping between negative and positive territory in the afte...

SEBI asks MF trustees to stand up for investors’ interests

Image
Market regulator does not want them to be ‘passive participants’ SEBI Chairman Ajay Tyagi and his team of officials that oversees mutual funds led by one of his four main lieutenants, Madhabi Puri Buch, may be finding themselves in a Catch-22 situation these past few months. It takes quite a balancing act figuring out the extent to which to regulate, when to intervene and how much to let go, while keeping an eagle’s eye on the goings-on in the debt mutual fund (MF) industry. The Indian MF industry has been rocked by the credit crisis in the non-banking finance sector where some debt funds have been caught holding instruments that have either delayed interest and/or principal payments and have seen their credit ratings fall. The excess risk that many credit risk funds have been taking these past years — and a few other debt schemes too joined the party to earn the extra buck — came to haunt the MF industry as many such funds saw their net asset value (NAV) fall. ...

At Vodafone Idea, revenue market share and cash are depleting fast

Image
Vodafone Idea Ltd may be India’s largest telecom company by subscriber base, but it also happens to be the smallest in terms of revenue market share among private sector operators. In the June quarter, Vodafone Idea was the only company to post a sequential decline in revenues, while competitors Bharti Airtel Ltd and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd reported notable expansion. This is based on quarterly revenue data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) compiled by SBICAP Securities Ltd. Based on adjusted gross revenues, including receipts from long-distance services, Vodafone Idea’s market share dropped from 32.1% in the quarter ended March 2019 to 27.8% last quarter. Two years ago, the combined market share of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular stood at 42.5%. SBICAP Securities estimates Vodafone Idea’s revenue market share to stabilize at around 20% in the medium term, with Reliance Jio seeing further gains by the end of FY20.
